nine to five

Because anything less than the best is a felony: Robbie Van Winkle lives.

Great, the bar got closed. Where are they gonna go study now?

I wish I'd thought of this business. I'm too superstitious to be OK with a hand-me-down but apparently lots of other people aren't bothered.

I know there are more important things at stake here (like what this whole story says about my profession, and/or if it says anything about the profession itself at all) but why did they have to mention the mohawk and tattoos? Anyway. I am sure that a great number of Average Working Joes who suit up for their respectable jobs every day have secondary "careers," but it's of course more shocking when the Working Joe is teaching your kid how to add and subtract. Ed Kubo's statement about Kugle's example not being representative of "the overwhelming number of educators in our state who work so hard to ensure our children are educated" is a little off ... it assumes she was not only a drug dealer but a lousy teacher because of it. Now, if NCLB is ever kicked to the dirty curb it deserves to land on, maybe we can get back to teaching Things That Matter Too - like character education, civic responsibility through service learning, etc. All I'm saying is, Kugle could have been the best damned math teacher in the country and a drug dealer at the same time. She could not be the best damned character educator in the country and a drug dealer at the same time. And shouldn't we all be character educators?

My point got watered down because of course I don't want to say something completely asinine like "Leave the woman alone, she was still doing her job" - no, she shouldn't be left alone, but till it's proved that she endangered the children she worked with or was a plain shitty teacher, it should matter less that she was a teacher and more that she was another island resident on ice. A dairy worker, a Starbucks barista, an office manager on ice who deals ecstasy can hurt as many people as a teacher can.

And now for some stupid news: I would have bought this.
