good morning, taka

Got some time? If not, this should suffice for now.

Remember the Citadel debacle? I know, so not the same thing. Yet it rings such a loud bell. That wasn't a civil rights victory for Shannon Faulkner and/or all womankind, it was an embarrassment. I love the Constitution, but I hate when people use it to make a point that is little more than personal.

In case any more clarification is needed, I thought it was awesome that Shannon Faulkner fought so long and hard against the institution (again, protecting the right to practice gender discrimination being so not the same as the protecting Native Hawaiian rights) but ... a week? One week? She endured two years of death threats, not to mention the ongoing legal battle - so it couldn't have been the general harassment from the school, which means it must have been that she just couldn't hack it there. I believe in battling injustice, but choose your battles wisely. That's like if the "unnamed student" fighting KSBE was admitted and then flunked out.

I'll always remember the picture of her standing in the rain with her "fellow" (ha) cadets ... she looked miserable, but she was there. Was it worth it? Maybe I'll go read In Glory's Shadow ...

i can't feel bad about white people getting discriminated against because of the color of their skin. the whole point of ksbe was to educate native hawaiians... just like the whole point of the kkk is white supremancy. so is it wrong for me to try to sue the kkk because they wouldn't admit me? that was a bit of an extreme example wasn't it?

Similar to Shannon's story, the Haole kid applied when he was a junior, the case is still on going and he will not get to go to Kamehameha either way because he will have graduated before the case is settled. Did you know the kid's mom lied on the entrance application and said he was Hawaiian blood even though he wasn't? That’s kharma, Bitch!

On a different note, I attended a rally a year back, a non-Hawaiian KSBE supporter spoke and his speech went something like this. "I have grown up in Hawaii and it has been known that Kamehameha School was created for the Hawaiian Children. I never got mad when I didn't get to go to Kamehameha, it was a privilege for my Hawaiian friends. I wouldn't take a gift that was meant for someone else and I know my Hawaiian friends would not accept a gift or privilege not meant for them. I decided to go to Punahou. Keep KSBE Hawaiian!"

I joke around and say Kamehameha students are all "Spoiled Hawaiians". Its only because my sister got in and I didn't. Once a month, she would have the luxury to eat Hawaiian food and the opportunity to go back for 2nds and 3rds, maybe even 4ths if there was still room in kou 'opu. Aka, a'ole huhu 'au 'ia 'oulua no ka mea apau. Sorry, I busted into my Hawaiian Language (Hope its grammatically correct, its been a while). But I was never seriously jealous like that mainland haole. Local haoles know better than to make a fuss like this. Get off the island and stay in the mainland if you can't assimilate to the island culture. This is Hawaii, not haole land.
