you'd think they were giving them away
'Tis the season. Geek furor is cute when it's a Harry Potter book release or even a Star Wars film; when guns are pulled over electronics, not so much.
The longest line I've ever stood in was a 2.5-hour wait for Space Mountain. At least no Sony-related shootings took place in Hawaii but geez, I still can't think of anything I'd do this for. Musing with J (who was in line at the time) possible profit from re-selling on eBay ... still wouldn't make it worth it for me. I would NOT wish to contribute to that odd holiday phenomenon called consumer mania ... remember what happened with Tickle Me Elmo? I refuse to even find out what TMX is all about.
Wonder how many people are going to die trying to get a Wii ...

afternoon to you.
i'd be interested to see a harry potter release met with that kind of enthusiasm. again, another difference between nerds and geeks. all of that video game violence spilling over into the parking lots of wal-marts everywhere.
that's not enthusiasm, it's insanity.
From a business point of view, next time I think I'd pony up the cash for 3 PS3's and pay 3 stupid college kids $1k to stand in the line. Once that is a go, I'd set up a PS3 auction on ebay 1 week before the sale and make a cool $21k. Then I could buy one of my own for $20k break even!
