the after party

The groom-to-be is working on his guest tables, father-of-the-bride is situating last-minute RSVPs, and the bride-to-be is ... sitting on her Oscar-obsessed @$$, scouring YouTube for "Rachel Getting Married" and "Slumdog Millionaire" clips. I wanna have an Oscar party, like the ones we had in college and grad school. College, when we cut class to watch the movies and could with at least a modicum of intelligence wager bets on the winners (and their couture) that night. Grad school: no time to watch movies, no patience for the awards - but drunk in time for the red carpet festivities. After which we'd switch to something else and come back in time for Director and Picture only.

This year, I've seen just two of the movies ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "The Dark Knight") and know I will not have time to see the others (really badly want to sneak in "Rachel Getting Married," though) but damnit, I wanna have a party. Even if we're serving Tostitos and ice water, and even if the show is just on in the background. I am looking forward to a party that is not The Party.

Don't get me wrong - I am (finally) very much looking forward to The Party. I think it will be a beautiful day and a great evening, the first steps on a journey we will travel together. So I'm trying not to look too far into the future, trying not to get too excited about things like gold statuettes and - oh yeah! - the other thing I'm really excited about, without apparent cause, because I haven't been training - the Great Aloha Run. One thing at a time, right?

I am gonna have a party, though. Even if it's a two-person, Tostito-and-water, pajama party. There will be a party!
