Hokay. Baking so far:
Per the alumni cookbook recipe (which I just noticed was attributed to a HIGH SCHOOL KID), I lined the bottom of the pan with chocolate chips, then made the batter. It took about three minutes to make the batter, which turned out a pretty yellow color and smelled of fresh lemons. So far, so good. Poured the batter over the chips (seemed weird to me, but the book said) and popped the whole thing in the oven.
The book didn't say whether to preheat or not (I did) and by 20 minutes into the bake, the top of the cake seemed way too brown. I lowered the heat and crossed my fingers.
Just pulled the thing out of the oven ... the center seems to have fallen in a bit (and the whole thing is such an unsightly brown that I think I'm gonna frost it tomorrow) but I think it might actually be okay.
Update: Scott (who will eat anything and who usually adds something comforting after any assessment of my culinary attempts) just pronounced it "dry," and nothing else. I guess I will be buying that angelfood cake after all.
No pics.
Too dismal.
8:42 It turns out that 1) S. ate the cake upside down, so he thought the chocolate chip crust was the top and 2) the overall effect is not that bad. I assumed the worst because Scott is a garbage disposal when it comes to desserts, and he took one bite and abandoned his piece - but actually, I finished his piece and rather enjoyed it.
Then again, it is that time of the month where I am eating everything in sight and rather enjoying it.
8:58 Then I cut a piece to eat myself because I was so irritated, and he ate the whole thing and said it was good! Is it the cake? Is it me? Is it him? There's something wrong with one of us!!! By the way, you can't taste the bananas at all. Stupid high school kid, see if I ever make your cake again. >:(

Lucky you that S is a garbage disposal. B is so picky I can't cook/buy him anything without his consent.
What frustrates me is he's so go with the flow he tells me to get what I want, which inevitably has tomatoes, onions, mushrooms or anything else from the mondo long list of stuff he doesn't eat.
Banana chocolate chip cake? Mmmm it sure SOUNDS yummy... did you ever wind up frosting it?
