it's a pisser
OK, a re-vision ...
I have no problem with the drug testing, but I do think it should be an issue separate from the salary package. And no, I don't think it's as simple as "If you're not on drugs, what do you have to worry about?" ... and no, I didn't become a teacher to piss in a cup (but then, do people become airline pilots to take drug tests before every workday?). And it's definitely not as simpleminded as teachers instructing kids how to roll a joint (but for a giggle, take a look at the 5th comment on this story ... surgeons operate and dentists drill, and they are supposed to do these things, but let me ask the commentor, who then IS "supposed" to teach your kid how to roll a joint?).
So it's not simple and it does involve the Constitution (what doesn't, these days) ... it's less about actual drug use than it is about civil rights. Well, I could complain about airport policies and the drastic changes that were made after 9/11, but my safety and that of those around me is just too important to bitch about not being allowed to carry my liquid makeup (although I am sure it's my Constitutional right to look fresh as a daisy when I de-plane) or about having to take off my shoes and dump and explain the contents of my purse - all of this is embarrassing, and along with my 3/4-full bottle of Aquafina I leave a tiny bit of dignity in that plastic bin, but I am more than happy to do so if that's the small part I have in flying safely.
I don't know about the logistics, cost, potential for instructional disruption, but hand me a cup and I will oblige.

hmm. i don't think of mandatory piss testing and airport security as similar. both are ridiculous. i've known people that are able circumvent both (not necessarily the same person). personally, i don't have a problem with them. although i find it hilarious that i was required to go through the same security protocols when i was on leave and headed back to iraq. i dunno who's stupid enough to try to hijack a plane full of soldiers (no civilians). blow up, yes, hijack, stupid. but as far as necessary? i don't know. i'd prefer to believe in people. more security isn't the solution, just like having armed guards in schools.
