Dear Ted Nugent,

Unarmed helplessness or a significant move toward non-violent conflict resolution? I bet if you were Tom Plate, and your hands were too full of groceries to even fumble for the gun that might be somewhere on your person at the time, you'd be wishing for a gun-free America, too. A gun-free Columbine means that Klebold and Harris would probably not have had guns.

Sincerely,

D_C

P.S. Read the last sentence and tell me that it does not equal "When everything else goes to cr*p, at least we can pick up a gun and solve our problems that way."

P.P.S. Please update.

*shrug* you can't have gun-free zones within a world of guns. that's like having smoking/non-smoking sections next to each other. i know i just opened that can of worms. it's a noble idea, but that's all it is. a gun-free america would just increase the black-market demand for it.
i don't want a war filled with guns but i'm not an extremist either. "guns are bad! let's get rid of all the guns!" or "trans-fats are bad! make all restuarants comply with not selling food with trans-fats!" it's sounds silly but i mean look at what peta stands for, and i see the same level of extreme craziness. i'm a common-sense middle ground kind of person.

When I got shaken down by one of the school jocks, non-violent conflict resolution and telling the teacher got me nowhere. Dropping him to the floor before gym class let me keep my lunch money and kept him off my back for the rest of my high school career. We both laughted about the whole thing later, though.

IMO violence is never the best option, nor should it be the first, but some people ignore everything else. The elbow attached to my hundred-something pound body was sufficient for a bigger school kid, but would it stop a highly motivated or armed individual? Probably not.

Weapons, be it gun or pepperspray or baseball bat or butter knife, are like those special spanners that aren't used for 99% of jobs, but your glad you have them in your toolbox when nothing else works. At the same time, people will improvise with whatever is available -- some people who wish to do harm use guns, some use bombs, some use poison, some use fire. Taking away one tool does not replace the need to teach the proper use of tools.

Weapons should be accessible to those who are highly qualified to use them. I much prefer the war on underground drug trafficking than a country where you can pack your narcotics alongside your lunch. If you know what I mean.

I don't think I'm an extremist; I just don't think that the situation could have been better if everyone in Luby's or at VT was armed.
