'cause I'm his smartest son

Just had newbie mom stop me at the office door and inform me that the work I gave her son (a skills inventory) is work he did, "like, two years ago." Which is fine, because the purpose of the packet was to see where he is in math. So I open it and review the first prompt: Brandon says that 2/5 is more than 1/2 because 2/5 has more pieces. Is he right or wrong?

Kid's answer: Brandon is right because 2 is more than 1.

Then he drew a picture that shows a whole divided into halves, with one half shaded, next to a whole divided into fourths, with two fourths shaded - but wait! One of the unshaded fourths is divided in half, making, what, a "fifth"? At any rate, the quantity illustrated in both pictures is 1/2, showing that 1) he didn't understand the question, 2) he doesn't understand the concept of fractions, and 3) Nevada state math standards are crap.

Bye.

you know, i heard in a movie that only 1/4 of the population can do fractions. the other 2/3's just don't care.

and to answer you bruce willis question. i have no idea, it probably involved fractions.

I think Brandon is 1/2 smart. The other 1/2 is divided between 1/4 playing, 1/8 legos architecture, and 1/8 confusion. Mom is pure 1/1 or 2/2 stupid, how ever you want to cut it.
