tutto va bene

Finished Granny Torrelli Makes Soup (it's still Sharon Creech month.) Of all her books it reminded me most of Replay - not just because of its Italian family-ness but because of Rosie's voice, which was a lot like Leo's even though Leo's story was told in the third-person. Rosie's ice queen tiger is my favorite part. Highlights: Love, jealousy, home cooking and that turning point:

"And here is the thing, Bailey and Rosie, when I went home that day, I felt as if I was ten years older. I saw Violetta on her way to Pardo's and I saw Marco down the lane looking for me, and I can't explain it, but I felt as if my life was bigger now."

I think I'll be able to get to Chasing Redbird and Bloomability before September. Instead of another author-theme I tentatively scheduled September to be Fantasy month because the kids are so into the genre ... Possible picks: Eragon (Christopher Paolini); Artemis Fowl (Eoin Colfer); Dragon Rider (Cornelia Funke); any Guardians of Gaho'ole book (Kathryn Lasky); any Charlie Bone book. Also I am going to TRY to get through a Harry Potter (I am really jealous of those who love HP, as surely any one installment provides at least a few days to several weeks of intense pleasure. It's like the platform (9 1/2?) at the train station. I cannot get through. Once in awhile I give it all I've got and plow head-on into the pillar, but I just fall down with a headache. I give the book back to whoever I borrowed it from and utter the forbidden words: I'll just watch the movie.)

When am I returning to adult literature, you ask? (Some YA fiction is pretty deep, I feel compelled to point out.) But soon. I'm still wading through the opening of 1776 and vaguely remember throwing Mirror Mirror into my Costco cart somewhere ... sometime ... also I'm really mad that I can't find A Long Way Down. Sometimes you just need some Nick Hornby and I've read my favorite, How to Be Good, cover to cover at least four times. I like High Fidelity too, but I hate Laura. Rob and Laura getting back together was like ... I can't remember but there's another book or movie that I love but with an ending I can't stand because two people get back together for absolutely no good reason. Get back to you on that. Damn, now it's going to bug me ...

You are busy aren't you? Let me know when there's a screen adaptation of those books. I can spend a few hours in front of the tube.
Yeah I admit the fact that Rob and Laura get back together is kinda junk but that's what people want. a happy ending. It's why we're so drawn to the 'Godfather' when at the end he takes care of all family business. If the movie had ended when Apollonia died, it probably wouldn't have done so well.
Although the other side of this argument is 'Empire Strikes Back', it ends on big down notes. Darth Vader is Luke's father, Hans gets frozen in carbonite and taken to Jabba, and the Rebellion is on the defensive.

i just remembered, it was gone with the wind, and it wasn't the ending. it was the fact that she was ever in love with ashley wilkes.
