One thing I look forward to about living alone is being able to sleep in on weekends. Make no mistake, there are lots of cool things about living with three other people plus a dog (light sleeper), a cat (compulsive eater), a chicken (who lives and clucks in fear of the light sleeper and compulsive eater), and a turtle (competitive swimmer who does noisy laps at daybreak) - but mornings aren't one of them. I used to be able to sleep through anything, but I seem to have lost my touch. Hence, I'm at work at 11 a.m. on a Saturday, with major errands already shot and stuffed: opened the requisite checking account (now I have two, how's that for confusing?); did a See's run for my mom: quarter bridge, quarter dark molasses chips times three, so that's three half-pound boxes, plus a half-pound box of mint truffles, equaling two pounds to be purchased with two one-pound gift certificates, of which only one is stamped with Redeemable in Hawaii, but the difference, thank goodness, amounts to a paltry dollar, which I pay and flee, bonus free confections and empty coffee cup in hand. Misery = finishing off the latte before waltzing into a candy store on the morning before Mother's Day.
