friends in high places

Dav Pilkey's A Friend for Dragon is the best book I have read all month. Lonely Dragon finds an unlikely friend, in true Pilkey style, in a piece of fruit. It's the author's typical silliness until Dragon loses his friend. Though the circumstances surrounding the tragedy are ridiculous, it's a profound and universal loss nonetheless.

I've always thought highly of Dav Pilkey because his Captain Underpants and Ricky Ricotta books gross kids out while making them laugh hysterically. When they're done with one, they reach for the next. With some kids, that's all the literary prowess you need. In contrast, A Friend for Dragon is a sweet treasure with simple warmth - as the author puts it: "a subtle, spiritual thing." Still Pilkey-silly ... but something different. Dav Pilkey made me tear. Eeee. Read it.
